How to choose a split

When 50/50 makes sense — and when proportions are better.

50/50

Equal split

Works well when your incomes are similar or when you want simple, transparent rules. You do not need to track who earns what — you have one clear rule you both agree on.

income-based

Income-based

A popular choice when incomes differ a lot. Each person contributes a similar percentage of their income to shared costs, so nobody gives up a disproportionate share of their budget. The calculator does this automatically.

custom %

Custom percentage

Useful when you have your own agreement that does not come directly from income — for example, one person has extra obligations. The slider lets you set any split and see the dollar result instantly.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

Is 50/50 fair in a relationship?

It depends on your situation. With similar incomes, 50/50 is simple and clear: one rule, no recalculating. If you earn very different amounts, some couples prefer an income-based split because each person contributes a similar share of their income to shared costs. There is no single right answer — the calculator shows the numbers so it is easier to agree on rules together.

How do you split costs with different incomes?

The simplest method: add both incomes and calculate what share of the total each person earns. Then multiply that share by shared expenses. Example: Emma earns $4,200 and Jake earns $7,800 — $12,000 together. Emma’s share is 35%, so with $3,200 of shared expenses, her part is $1,120. The calculator above does this automatically after you enter incomes.

Does the calculator save my data?

No. All calculations happen only in your browser. No numbers or names are sent to a server or stored anywhere. You can enter fictional values and the calculator will still work correctly.

Do we need a joint account?

No. CoupleBud is made for couples with separate accounts. The app shows who pays whom at the end of the month to even out shared costs. Each person pays from their own account, with no bank connection.

How is the calculator different from CoupleBud?

The calculator is a one-time tool for checking a split for specific numbers — you enter incomes and see the result. The app works all month: you add real expenses, sync them with your partner, and get one simple summary at the end showing who pays whom. It is a deeper level of tracking.

Want to settle real expenses, not just an example?

CoupleBud syncs both partners’ expenses and shows one simple monthly settlement — who pays whom.
